Health Effects of Vibration White Finger (HAVS)
There are two main factors to be aware of which can result in adverse effects of Vibration White Finger. The first being the prolonged use of any hand held vibrating source. The second is the vibration being significantly intense.
Pneumatic tools are amongst the more obvious culprits from which the vibration is significantly intense to affect the adverse health effects of Vibration White Finger. Examples of such tools are, jack hammers, impact wrenches, wakker plates and kango hammers.
It is interesting to note that the length of time of exposure to such machinery to affect the adverse health effects of Vibration White Finger is variable, that is to say, it can depend on the different physiological response of the individual and the variance in the transfer of energy.
Vibration White Finger (HAVS) is often defined as having three separate components
- Musculoskeletal Disturbances – bone, joint and muscle disorders
- Circulatory Disturbances – vasospasm, blanching (white finger)
- Sensory and Motor Disturbances – numbness, loss of dexterity
It is important to remember that all three component s may not present in a claimant at the same time. Perhaps the more common component of individuals presenting with Vibration White Finger is on the circulatory sphere. Typically patients note the tingling sensation or complain of pins and needles, numbness and then pain as the circulation to the fingers recovers.
Often claimants will describe their fingers as looking ‘dead’ or ‘white’, medically known as blanching and hence the term Vibration White Finger. This is accompanied by loss of feeling and dexterity. Initially the blanching will be evident to the tips of a couple of the digits. However, as the exposure to vibratory machinery continues, the blanching can affect all fingers from the tip to the palm, the thumbs being the last to be affected. All the aforementioned symptoms can often be precipitated by exposure to cold, damp conditions or even with some patients, they can be triggered by even holding a cold drink!
